Denise Hamilton-Robson MChS. BSc (Hons) Podiatry

Podiatry

Denise Hamilton-Robson

Denise graduated from the University of Brighton in 2006 with a BSc (Hons) degree in Podiatry. She is a member of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists and registered with the Health Professions Council. Since qualifying Denise has worked within the NHS and Private Practice.

A question commonly asked is 'What is the difference between a Podiatrist and a Chiropodist?' The answer is basically nothing. The title has simply been changed to bring the UK in line with the rest of the world. Podiatrists however, are highly trained ands spend three years at University learning how illness can manifest in the feet and are skilled in wound care and tissue viability.

Another area of Podiatry and one in which Denise is especially interested is biomechanics. This looks at the way the foot functions and how it can impact on the rest of the body and vice versa. Poor foot function can not only cause pain within the foot itself, but knee, hip and back problems as well. Being a keen runner is the reason Denise became a Podiatrist in the first place after consulting one herself with persistent knee pain and injury.

Diabetes can cause major problems in the feet leaving them at risk of ulceration and infection however, regular Podiatry intervention has been shown to reduce hospital admissions and amputations. With the incidence of Type II diabetes on the increase the role of the Podiatrist is becoming increasingly important and necessary.
